Club History:

Club Meetings:

We meet the second Thursday (business meetings) and the fourth Thursday (program meeting) each month.

Service Projects & Fundraisers:

Through the years we have had many successful service projects, but our most successful service projects are Begin With Reading, which focuses on literacy for pre-school children and the Angel Tree, which provides needy children with clothing and toys at Christmas.

Begin With Reading has been in existence since July, 1995 when the Extension Service Home Economist and Altrusa Literacy Committee Chairman introduced the idea to members of her Extension Advisory Committee and the Literacy Committee. It was the beginning of a perfect partnership. Begin With Reading schedules volunteer readers to visit assigned pre-schools once a month. The volunteer reader reads a book from the Begin With Reading library, leaves the book for each child to rotate taking home until every child has had an opportunity to have their parent read the book to them.

In conjunction with Mississippi Valley State Universitys Child Development Center and Mississippi Valley State Universitys newly constructed recording studio, Altrusa International, Inc. of Greenwood is in the second year of developing another important phase of the Begin With Reading program. Volunteer Readers record their favorite books, as well as various other books at the MVSU recording studio. The recorded books are then copied to several cassette tapes. The cassette tapes are donated to the childcare facilities currently serviced by the Begin With Reading program.

Other service projects Greenwood members are involved with include a very active Astra Club, Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Salvation Army Christmas Bear Dressing, Weekly Readers are provided to 4th graders at a local elementary school, two needy graduating seniors are awarded $500 scholarships each year. These projects are funded by the sale of Spring flower bulbs.
