Greater Gadsden, AL

Club History:

Altrusa of Greater Gadsden, Alabama was organized on April 24, 1980. We received our charter on June 27, 1980 with 36 Charter Members.

Club Meetings:

We meet the fourth Thursday of each month with the exception of April and November when we meet on the third Thursday. December is determined on an annual basis. We meet at noon at the Gadsden Country Club.

Service Projects & Fundraisers:

Our main service project for a number of years has been the Eagle Rock Ranch for young boys. These boys have emotional problems and special educational needs. They are from broken homes and have had difficulty staying in foster homes.

We renovated an old garage into an apartment building for these boys to live in. We furnished the drapes, furniture, a library, a computer room and filled the bookshelves with books for their studies. We landscaped the yards with beautiful shrubbery and placed a large brick entrance gate to the grounds. We purchased a John Deere tractor for the boys to use in tilling the soil to grow their food and for beautification of the grounds. This past year, we purchased a family van for transportation to and from school, church, and other activities.

We are having a book drive for children's books by placing an Altrusa Collection Box in a prominent retail area. All the members are looking forward to working on this worthwhile project.

The ASTRA Club of Greater Gadsden is 40-members strong and still growing. They are involved with several worthwhile projects under the leadership of Altrusa member, Elaine Hall. It is truly a blessing to work with these girls. Altrusa donates $2,000 for the ASTRA Scholarship Fund each year. In July, 2001, the ASTRA Club at Southside High School received the second place award for ASTRA Club service from Altrusa International.
