Club History:

Altrusa International, Inc. of Huntsville, chartered in 1948, has provided a legacy of service to Huntsville and the wider community. We envision our future as dynamic and goal-oriented as we challenge ourselves to live and promote our mission of service.

Club Meetings:

Altrusa International of Huntsville meets the first Monday at 11:30 A.M. at the Heritage Club, and on the third Tuesday at 5:30 P.M. at the Green Hills Grille.

Service Projects & Fundraisers:

Many local agencies have benefited from Altrusa projects. A plaque in the Madison County Courthouse shows Altrusa being awarded the Civic Club Council Award three times. The first winning project was the establishment in 1980 of the Hospital Hospitality House (now known as the Blount Hospitality House); the next award was for coordinating the dress and display of more than 500 teddy bears for the Salvation Army's Christmas Charities; and the most recent award recognized Altrusa for our "Books - From Kids to Kids" project - used books donated by community children for their less fortunate peers.

Locally, club members choose among many service projects. Special Olympics is a favorite! Each year, Altrusa volunteers work in the food and refreshment stands during Track and Field Events.

Huntsville Altrusans volunteer as tutors at local service and literacy centers. Altrusa also assists the Even Start family literacy program in the Huntsville City Schools by helping with beginning- and end-of-year evaluations of children in the Even Start program. The club participates with other Altrusans nationwide in a "Make A Difference Day" project each October.

In 1953 the Huntsville Club issued its first scholarship loan and in 1957 established the Fannie Lou Nicholson educational Fund. This low interest loan fund has helped 65 women achieve advanced degrees in medicine, music, nursing, pharmacy, audiology, veterinary medicine, and elementary education.
