Jackson, TN

Club History:

The Altrusa Club of Jackson was organized on May 25, 1949 and received its charter on September 19, 1949.

Club Meetings:

The club meets the first Tuesday of the month at the Old Country Store for the business meeting and the third Tuesday evening of the month for the board and program meeting.

Service Projects & Fundraisers:

Service to the community is our goal and we strive to achieve this goal through service to the American Cancer Society, Camp Blue Bird (for cancer patients), the Jackson Boys and Girls Club, Girl Scouts of America, The STAR Center, Project Graduation (aiding high schools with after-graduation programs) and through our scholarship to a student attending a local college.

Our fund raising projects are varied and fun filled. We meet twice a year, during October and November, to make hard rock candy, which we sell locally. This is a daylong activity and we bring food and have a wonderful time fellowshipping with each other while we work at this fund raising project.

One of the highlights of the year is the Woman of the Year Banquet when we honor an outstanding woman living in the city of Jackson or Madison County. When selecting the honoree we base our decision on achievements, leadership and service to the community during previous years as well as humanitarian contributions during the current year. Jackson is blessed with outstanding women and this is one way we seek to honor them and thank them for their contributions to our city.

Several years ago one of our members, Shirley Dixon, suggested that we hold an annual graduation service for local men and women who have received the General Education Diploma (GED) since they do not participate in graduation services at the local high schools. This a moving and rewarding service Altrusa of Jackson gives to our community.
