Service Projects & Fundraisers:
Our service projects are the types that the larger service organizations in our town overlook.
- We host Halloween and Valentine’s Day parties for the Elizabethton Girls' Group Home, a half-way house for teen girls who have been in serious trouble with the law and who are now attempting to turn their lives around. At these parties the kids have a chance to remember that they still know how to have good simple fun.
- Every September, we partner with East Tennessee State University to sponsor a large picnic/cookout for the International students. It serves to welcome them to East Tennessee and to give them an opportunity to meet other students with whom they may have a lot in common.
- At our Christmas Party every year we fill stockings for the Salvation Army to give to needy children. That is great fun as we bring in items we have been collecting all year, dump them in a huge pile on the table, and then put together some great stockings!
- We also offer scholarships to women returning to school after having been in the workplace and supporting their families. The most recent ones went to pay tuition for two women studying to be licensed as Practical Nurses at The Tennessee Technology Center.
Our fund-raising projects include- A spring and fall garage sale, and the famous quilt raffles. We generally raffle one at Conference and then another locally sometime during the year.
- Our latest fund-raising project was a Pizza Inn night where the Altrusans and their family and friends who served as helpers acted as Greeters, Wait Staff, Bussers, Dishwashers, etc. for 4 hours on a Thursday night. In exchange we received 10% of ALL checks plus all of our tips. It was great fun and really added to our service budget. We are already planning the next one!
