Club History: Altrusa International, Inc., of Knoxville, Tennessee was founded on November 14, 1949 and received its charter on October 14, 1953. One of the current members, Margaret Brewer, was a charter member of the Oak Ridge Club, a member of the Kingsport Club, and is an active member of the Knoxville Club. Club Meetings: The Club meets the third Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at Graystone Presbyterian Church on Woodlawn Pike. Service Projects & Fundraisers: The Knoxville Club has always been a strong supporter of community service projects, the most notable of which was the restoration of house in the downtown area to be used as the Agape House. The members completely restored the house and provided furnishings for the home to be used to house women recovering from drug and alcohol abuse. The club has also completely restored and furnished two rooms at the local YWCA. Among other projects, the Club provided funds for a baptismal fount at the Fourth Presbyterian Church in memory of one of its charter members, Idell Baum; along with Pilot Club provided a gift of a clothes dryer to Mount Rest Home and has annually provided clothing and other items to the Lakeshore Mental Health Facility. For our “Make A Difference Day” project this year, the Knoxville Club provided 50 “little Golden books” to the Sevier County Community Resources Department to be distributed to newborn babies at the Sevier County Hospital. The Club has always been active in literacy projects supporting the “Friends of Literacy” with funds, supplies and tutoring. This year the Club plans to award a scholarship to a high school student studying cosmetology. This scholarship will be in memory of one of our members, Velma Southern. For fundraising activities, the Club has an annual sale of pecans and also joins with the Sertoma Club for a gigantic garage sale in August. 2008 - 2009 Officers: Jean Dake, President Velma Pressly, Vice President Regina Everett, Secretary/Treasurer Directors: Carrie Henderson, Polly Stiner, Della Ledford For more information contact: Jean Dake 7700 Wendy Lane Powell, TN 37849 Phone: 865-963-8919 Email: Jean Dake |
