Tupelo, MS

Club History:

Altrusa International of Tupelo, MS was organized on September 7, 1969, and chartered on August 24, 1970 with 27 Charter Members. This club is unique in that it was organized by Edna Hazen, an International organizer who went into recommended areas to organize Altrusa clubs. And, it is unique also, because there are three sisters and a mother and daughter who are members.

Every year, members of this club have attended each District Workshop and each District Conference. A member or members of the club have attended thirteen International Conventions.   Marie L. Witt was elected to the first elected International Nominating Committee and served as Governor of District Four in 1983-1985. Many of the club's members have served on the District level and on the International level.

Club Meetings:

Members meet each first Monday night for a Program meeting and a Board meeting. Each third Monday night is the Business meeting.

Service Projects & Fundraisers:
  • For fourteen years the Tupelo club has sponsored a Senior Americans Day at the Fair. Between 800-1000 Senior Americans attend each year from over sixteen counties in Mississippi and Alabama. Radio and television personalities give help and entertainment. Booths are provided for various health care agencies, and lunch is served for all who attend.
  • During the month of July, members deliver Smiley Face mugs filled with fresh flowers to shutins or anyone that needs a smile. This will be the third year for this project, and members have made contact with 50-60 people. This project is made possible by Teleflora wire Service, Boyd's Flowers and Gifts, and the generous time of our members.
  • The Louise Godwin Scholarship Fund allowed the Tupelo Club to give $2800 to deserving students, starting with 3 of our own Astra Girls. In addition, 3 scholarships were given to the grandchildren of 3 of our members. Mrs. Louise Godwin is an honary member of our club and has donated hundreds of dollars to this scholarship fund.
  • To raise funds, the club sponsors the Gum Tree Classic Horse Show held each October. This year marked the 27th year for this project. Proceeds from this show help to sponsor the club's many service projects.
