Club History:

Altrusa International of Tuscaloosa, sponsored by Altrusa of Birmingham, received its charter in 1952. During its 50+ years, several Tuscaloosa Altrusans have served on District committees and on the District Four Board. There are 26 active members and 7 emeritus members.

Club Meetings:

The Tuscaloosa club meets the 4th Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at the Bank of Tuscaloosa. Dinner is provided.

Service Projects & Fundraisers:
  • The major fund-raiser for the club is a bake sale and spaghetti luncheon each spring.
  • The sale of wrapping paper and poinsettias at holiday time.
  • Members provide Thanksgiving Dinner for the International students and their families at the University of Alabama.
  • Ringing the Bell at Christmas for the Salvation Army is another project.
  • The Angel Tree at Christmas.
  • The Apple Tree (for school supplies).
  • The Club fills 25 Christmas stockings for the Salvation Army, and dresses 30 teddy bears for nursing home patients.

The East Tuscaloosa Family Resource Center is the recipient of their generosity through money and school supplies, as well as individual bags of supplies for the children, and a birthday party during the summer program. For several years two Tuscaloosa County schools have received money for computers and supplies. Monies also are donated to Tuscaloosa County Library, Easter Seal Rehab and other agencies for their literacy programs.
